The origin of the myth of Chateau Angelus emerges from the past centuries and today makes it the symbol of the Saint-Emilion territory: the estate has always been present in the classification of Premier Grand Cru Classè, since its creation in 1954. The unmistakable golden label and the same name of the Chateau are a tribute to the history of the place: the design of the bell refers to the sound that the vineyard workers used to hear coming from the village church. To celebrate this stunning achievement, the Boüard de Laforest family, owners of Chateau Angelus for eight generations, decided to characterize these bottles with the symbolic image of the mythological bird that rises from its ashes.
Premier vin the French say to identify the most prestigious wine of a Bordeaux winery. The Saint-Emilion Grand Cru of Chateau Angelus is certainly the most important interpretation of this area located on the right bank of the Dordogne river: the vineyards are situated on clay-limestone and sandy-limestone plateaux and are made up of Merlot and Cabernet Franc in practically equal parts, while only a residual percentage is reserved for Cabernet Sauvignon. Fermentations take place in cylindrical steel containers and in inverted conical cement tanks, and the pressings are gentle, to achieve an extraction of polyphenols entirely focused on refinement. The transfers are carried out by gravity. The final blend consists of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, produced from grapes coming from very old vineyards that are up to 80 years old. The total mass of the wine rests in new French oak barriques for a period of 22 months.
