Chenin Blanc 'Metamorphika' Costador 2020
ArtisanalCostador's Chenin Blanc "Metamorphika" is a Catalunian white wine, part o the amphora wine of this historical winery. Most vines in Costador estate are very old, a sign of crafty vineyard management in the hard climate of Mediterranean Spain. This ‘orange’ version of Chenin Blanc is surprisingly balanced, also considering this variety comes from the northern extremes of the European wine area: it is savoury, very complex and of a good body, very persistant. The long maceration helps the development of mature aromas of jam, caramel and a pleasant hint of salty almond comes out on the finish.
The Chenin Blanc from the Spanish winery Costador is part of the "Metamorphika" line, which offers interesting versions of wines with a strong and decisive personality. It is a range of labels made using the ancient method of skin maceration, applied also to white grape varieties. Resulting from vinifications in neutral terracotta containers, it is marketed in original ceramic bottles, which emphasize its absolute uniqueness. The Chenin Blanc, a grape variety mainly cultivated in the French region of the Loire Valley, has adapted very well in Catalonia and produces an intense, rich, and mature wine, with dense and enveloping aromas.
The "Metamorphika" Chenin Blanc from Costador originates in a Spanish reality, which has an estate in the inland of the city of Tarragona. The vineyards are located at an altitude between 500 and 800 meters, in an area with a mild climate, influenced by sea breezes, which soften the significant temperature variations between day and night. The soils are quite heterogeneous, composed of limestone, clay, and slate rocks. No chemical products are used between the rows, and the principles of organic farming and biodynamic practices are applied. The Chenin Blanc vineyards are about 60 years old, and the grapes are vinified with a skin maceration of one week, using only indigenous yeasts, in terracotta containers. The wine ages in the same vessels for about 6 months on the fine lees.
The "Metamorphika" Chenin Blanc from Costador is an Orange Wine dedicated to enthusiasts of this particular type of wine, increasingly appreciated by the general public, also for its particular versatility at the table. It pairs very well with white meats, even roasted, or with medium-aged cheeses, tasty and flavorful. It presents in the glass with a beautiful yellow color with bright orange reflections. Intense and broad, it opens with aromas of bitter orange peel, ripe yellow-fleshed fruit, loquat, peach, quince, soft notes of wildflower honey and caramel, hints of almond, dried fruit, and delicate spices. Of remarkable structure, it is broad and harmonious, mature and persistent, with a long and savory finish.
