Callmewine's FavouritesThe 'Zegla' by Renato Keber is a very intense, rich and full-bodied expression of Friulano from the homonymous cru of Collio, enhanced through a project involving other historic winemakers. It is produced with fermentation in oak barrels, skin maceration and long aging in wood, steel and bottle. It expresses great complexity, richness, structure and persistence.
The Zegla by Renato Keber is born from the ambition to fully and best interpret the potential of the Friulano grape. The vineyards of the small hamlet of Zegla, located in the Cormons area, are now considered by many as the jewel of the wine heritage of Collio, and this is also believed by the winemakers united in a very ambitious project: to promote to the rank of cru, within the Collio denomination, the vineyards of Zegla. This project has materialized in the commitment, by each individual producer, to create a white wine from Friulano grapes coming from the same cru.
Currently, the Friulano Zegla is produced by three winemakers, Renato Keber, Michele Blazic, and Kristian Keber, each of whom offers their personal interpretation while respecting a shared production method, conceived as a sort of production regulation: 100% Friulano grapes from the same cru; skin maceration for a few days; spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts in Slavonian oak barrels and released for sale after 5 years.from the harvest. Renato Keber applies a maturation of 12 months in Slavonian oak barrels, 24 months in steel, and another 36 months in the bottle. The surprising thing is that, despite the long maturation, this intense and mature expression of the territory is able to reveal a remarkable aging potential, showing, during its rest in the cellar, increasing depth, character, and substance.
The Friulano Zegla by Renato Keber unequivocally demonstrates the extraordinary vocation of the vineyard and its ability to best express the immense potential of the native grape variety par excellence of this area of Collio. Body, structure, complexity, richness, and longevity characterize this great white wine with a broad and articulated aromatic profile. It smells of dried yellow fruits like peaches and apricots, but also caramelized fruits, pastries, honey, oriental spices, and hydrocarbons. On the palate, it confirms itself as deep, intense, and persistent, yet also endowed with freshness, vigor, and minerality: qualities that suggest thepossibility of a long and positive evolution in the bottle for the years to come.
