The Grand Cru Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes from Domaine Ponsot is a great Pinot Noir, which comes to light in the territory of Morey-Saint-Denis, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits. Its origins date back to Clos Saint-Denis, created in the 11th century by the canons of Vergy. The vineyards are located at an altitude of about 250 meters above sea level, with an eastward exposure. Here, Pinot Noir reaches perfect ripeness, expressing wines of rare elegance and complexity.
The Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru Domaine Ponsot is born in an area rich in history. Already in medieval times, the area of Clos de la Roche was cultivated with vineyards and was known by the same name. The denomination dates back to Celtic times, when large stones were used by the Druids to perform sacred rites. One of these stones is present on the hill of Morey St. Denis, right near the vineyard of Clos de la Roche, in lieu-dit Pierre Virant. The lieu-dit retains the same area of 4 hectares that it had originally, but in 1936, with the creation of the Appellation of Bourgogne, the surface area of Clos de la Roche was expanded to 17 hectares and included the surrounding lands. The Domaine Ponson owns the largest area, of 3.4 hectares, of which 3 are within the historic lieu-dit, the most prestigious area overall. The grapes are hand-harvested at full phenolic maturity and the bunches are selected directly in the vineyard. Fermentations occur with skin maceration in open conical oak vats at controlled temperature. Aging takes place in French oak barriques, partly new and partly already used, for a period of two years.
