LANGHE ROSSO 'LARIGI' ELIO ALTARE 2019 DESCRIPTION

Elio Altare's Langhe Rosso 'Larigi' is a Piedmontese wine produced in the Langhe, in the commune of La Morra to be precise. It is a pure Barbera version of particular value and structure. The choice of long ageing in barriques allows us to get to know a rather new face of Barbera. To the characteristic lively freshness and fruity exuberance, it combines intense and evolved aromas. The sip thus finds a pleasant and surprising balance, which dampens some typical varietal freshness. It is a harmonious, intense and multifaceted Barbera, which conquers for its structure and capacity for ageing.

The Langhe Rosso 'Larigi' comes from the estate of one of the most famous producers of the Barolo appellation. Elio Altare's winery has origins dating back to the post World War II period and represents a perfect balance between the great tradition of the Langhe and the spirit of innovation and experimentation. On returning from a trip to Burgundy, Altare decided to change the ageing method and replace the traditional large barrels with French oak barriques. A change that initially caused a stir, but which today no longer scandalises anyone. His labels are now a reference point for all fans of great Piedmontese reds. No pesticides, fertilisers or chemical preparations are used in the vineyard and the work in the cellar is carried out with rigour and the utmost respect for top quality raw materials.

Elio Altare's Barbera Langhe Rosso 'Larigi' is produced with grapes from an old vineyard, more than 60 years old, cultivated on soils consisting of clayey-calcareous marl mixed with sand. Fermentation takes place with a 4-day maceration on the skins in temperature-controlled rotofermenters. Before bottling, the wine matures for 18 months in new French oak barriques. The colour is a deep purple red. The nose opens on notes of blackberries, raspberries, hints of undergrowth and humus, floral hints, spicy and balsamic notes. The sip is intense, with juicy fruit, complex and evolved aromas. The tannins are soft and the finish is very fresh and persistent.
