'Lomas del Polo' Sopla Levante 2020
Artisanal'Lomas del Polo' by the Spanish winery Sopla Levante is a juicy and fresh red wine perfect for a barbecue with friends. This label is made from a carefully chosen blend of red grapes vinified with the sole use of indigenous yeasts while the wine is aged in wood for 6 months. The ruby red colour shines in the glass and introduces notes of red fruits and hints of wood to the nose. The sip is agile, harmonious, fruity and with good taste persistence
“Lomas del Polo” is the name of the wonderful vineyard owned by Bodega Sopla Levante, a winery founded within the Comunidad Valenciana by four friends who are professionals in the wine world. Their project is to recover local grape varieties that have been forgotten and vinify them precisely but without invasive interventions, allowing all the magic of this place, suspended between the sea and the sand, to emerge in the wine.
“Lomas del Polo” from the Sopla Levante winery is vinified from four different indigenous grape varieties, some of which are still unknown. The namesake plot is located at sea level within the Natural Park of La Mata, in the province of Alicante, covering a tiny area of only 1,000 square meters. The territory is nestled between the Mediterranean Sea coast and the salt lagoons in the immediate hinterland; the soil is almost exclusively sandy: the vines are own-rooted and are 60 years old. The harvest proceeds manually in the second half of August, and in the winery, fermentation starts spontaneously, thanks to the indigenous yeasts: the winemaking operations exclude the use of sulfites or any other enological additives. The aging proceeds for several months in contact with chips obtained from the wood of the vines that have reached the end of their life cycle. A handful of a few hundred bottles is the precious bounty that annually leaves the winery.
“Lomas del Polo” from Bodega Sopla Levante presents itself with a ruby color, with a medium chromatic intensity: the appearance is bright, with rather light legs. The aromas hit the nose with a sense of clarity and good intensity: the character is distinctly fruity, fragrant with ripe red fruit, with penetrating floral hints. A sweet sensation, like pastry glaze, lingers in the background, accompanied by light toasted wood notes. The tasting is pleasantly surprising, more vertical than what the nose suggested: a dry sip with good freshness proceeds in accordance with a moderate warming sensation and a tannin that is elegantly silky. A red to be enjoyed with taste with moderately aged cheeses.
