Belcolle
Bel Colle was founded in the 1990s in Verduno, in the Barolo hills, with the aim of promoting the native grape varieties of the Langhe. Under the guidance of oenologist Paolo Torchio, the winery has established itself as a benchmark for the production of clean and elegant wines, becoming the leading Italian producer of Verduno Pelaverga. In 2015, ownership passed to the Bosio family, who expanded the vineyard estate, focusing production on the highest quality expressions. Today, the winery is run by Luca Bosio, representing the new generation, and Mario Albrito, a veteran with over 40 years of experience in the Langhe. The company manages 10 hectares of vineyards distributed between Verduno, the Langhe and the Asti area and includes prestigious Barolo geographical indications.
Belcolle's working method is based on organic, sustainable viticulture and an oenological approach that limits interventions during vinification. The vineyards are worked manually using organic compounds and preparations, but no systemic treatments or herbicides are used. Fertilisation is organic and the rows are grassed with legumes which, once ploughed under, enrich the soil. Pests are controlled using pheromone traps and colour confusion, thus minimising the use of pesticides. The harvest is manual, as are all operations in the vineyard. In the cellar, soft pressing, balanced maceration and fermentation with selected indigenous yeasts from the area are carried out. The wine is aged in barrels for extended periods, following the tradition of the Langhe with the aim of preserving the varietal characteristics of each grape variety.
Belcolle wines are characterised by their purity, elegance and ability to express the unique characteristics of the Verduno terroir. The area has young soils with alternating layers of clayey marl and crystalline chalk, which give the wines intense aromas and a delicate structure. Among the pride of the area, Verduno Pelaverga, a grape variety grown in one of Italy's smallest appellations, is one of the jewels of the winery, a smooth red with typical hints of white pepper. Production also includes native whites such as Nascetta, Favorita and Arneis, as well as Barbaresco, Barbera and Alta Langa, all expressions of the link between grape variety and territory.
