Cantine Barbera
Le Cantine Barbera, immersed in the sunny and bright landscape of Menfi, just a few steps from the crystal-clear sea of Porto Palo, are an excellent production reality of Sicily, among the protagonists of the fascinating and surprising panorama of artisanal wine on the island. The identity of the winery coincides with that of the winemaker entrepreneur Marilena Barbera who, together with her mother, signs a production of great territorial typicity, resulting from 15 hectares of vineyard populated exclusively by indigenous varieties: Grillo, Catarratto, Insolia, Zibibbo, Perricone, Nero d'Avola and others.
The story of Cantine Barbera began in 2001, when Marilena, after years spent away "in a place that did not belong to me", to quote the words of the winemaker, returned to Sicily to cultivate the vineyard left to her by her father, discovering in the cultivation of grapes the vocation of her life. Today her activity is based on organic farming and a minimal approach both in the vineyard and in the winery, founded on attention to detail and on the enhancement of the raw material, without resorting to tricks or invasive technologies. In the vineyard, copper and sulfur are allowed in small quantities and only when necessary, while in the winery the musts ferment with the skins thanks to the action of indigenous yeasts, both for reds and whites. The only additives allowed are vitamin C and low quantities of sulfites. All these operations are conducted by Marilena, assisted by her mother and a small group of collaborators, and indeed her production faithfully reflects her straightforward, sincere, spontaneous, and gritty character.
The wines of Cantine Barbera are the result of the happy union between the energy of the sun, the richness of the sea, and the personality of the winemaker who produces them. Strength, character, energy, and minerality are the words that best describe the waves of light and sea that these labels, like few others, are capable of offering with every sip. Light and sea: light that rests on the sea and makes it shine together with the quartz of the sand, when the territory is bathed in
