San Ferdinando
The San Ferdinando winery extends over more than 60 hectares on the hills of Val di Chiana, in the heart of Tuscany. The lands and the ancient farmhouses were purchased in 1998 by the Grifoni family, who inaugurated a brilliant production activity by planting 10 hectares of vineyard and creating a modern and functional winery. Production began in 2009, with the first harvest of Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo. The estate includes a splendid agriturismo, where it is possible to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the territory.
Today at San Ferdinando, the work in the vineyard and winery is directed and closely monitored by Simone Zucchetti. Only native Tuscan varieties such as Ciliegiolo, Sangiovese, Pugnitello, and Vermentino are cultivated in the vineyard. Almost all operations in the vineyard are carried out manually, including hoeing and grape harvesting, while tractors are used for topping and treatments. The high quality of the grapes is guaranteed by careful selection using a vibrating table. The philosophy of the The San Ferdinando winery is characterized by respect for the environment and nature: treatments follow the principles of integrated pest management, in fact, herbicides and insecticides are not used, but rather traditional techniques, such as sowing cover crops, green manuring, and manuring. Furthermore, the use of sulfites is kept to a minimum. The grapes are fermented and aged in truncated conical tanks and steel vats. Subsequently, the wine matures in large barrels and tonneaux of French oak.
San Ferdinando offers typical and territorial wines with a traditional profile. Among all the labels of the winery, a fresh and spicy Ciliegiolo and a very pleasant and fragrant Vermentino stand out: oenological expressions that best embody the fresher and more drinkable soul of Tuscany.
