Arcuri Sergio
On the Calabrian Ionian coast, in the small town of Cirò Marina, nestled between the Ionian Sea and the Silano plateau, lies the reality of Sergio Arcuri. A historic winery that for more than four generations has carried on family traditions in producing authentic and artisanal wine, respecting the land and following the processing techniques handed down from father to father. Thus, pure and genuine expressions are born, offspring of an intact and healthy territory, that preserve the ancient tradition and that secular love that the Arcuri family has for the land. It all started with Mansueto Arcuri at the end of the 1800s who, driven by his passion for wine, decided to produce the first bulk red for friends and relatives. In 1973 the winery passed into the hands of his son Giuseppe who continued the sales trying to satisfy an ever-growing number of customers. Only in 2009 was the estate inherited by Sergio, the current owner, who, together with his brother Francesco, decided to bottle the wine and make it known throughout Italy, gaining appreciation even outside of national borders. The project of Sergio and Francesco is one that is hard not to become attached to, based on love, passion, and respect for the land, with a touch of innovation added. It is difficult to find wineries that have refused to follow that common request, which affected Southern Italy, focused on quantity at the expense of typicity and authenticity: Sergio Arcuri is one of the few survivors.
The Sergio Arcuri winery has 8 hectares of vineyards distributed in two different areas. The principal grape of the territory is the Gaglioppo, the most well-known red grape variety of the region, which the winery cultivates in purity. The particularly arid, ventilated, and warm climate allows for an advanced ripening of the grapes, which tend to accumulate an important sugar level. The vines, grown according to the principles of organic farming with a bush and spurred cordon system, were planted in 1945 and the more recent ones in 1980. The soil, composed of the famous red lands, has not seen the use of synthetic chemical substances, which, according to the winery, can disrupt the natural cycle of nature. As in the vineyard, the belief in the winery is always the same: spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts, no invasive intervention, and no use of exogenous substances. Vinification and aging take place in open concrete tanks, nicknamed palmenti.
With such low production and so few hectares, the wines of Sergio Arcuri are true gems: famous is l'Aris, Cirò Rosso that “baroleggia” and that expresses the rich, Mediterranean, and warm soul of the Calabrian land. Spicy and authentic reds: a hymn to this fantastic territory and to what it can give if treated with care and respect. Moving wines that taste of Calabria and evoke the scents and flavors of the Ionian. Honest and pure, without tricks, that speak of the territory and the grape.
