Austere, noble, and deep, at times reserved and discreet, Mauro Franchino's Gattinara seems to mirror the personality of its producer—an authentic vintner from northern Piedmont, a man of another era who has been cultivating three hectares of vineyards and producing small quantities of wine for decades, far from the limelight and known only to a few enthusiasts. It reflects the traditionalist style of northern Piedmont, unfiltered, without conceding any of the warm and soft roundness of international influence. Tension, tannin, minerality, and freshness animate a powerful and vigorous structure, giving it momentum and dynamism and making the sip gratifying, deep, and three-dimensional.

Franchino's Gattinara is produced in small quantities from Nebbiolo grapes originating from less than 3 hectares of vineyard. In a small cellar in the centre of Gattinara, located inside an ancient building, it ferments in concrete tanks, resting for about 12 months and slowly maturing for at least 36 months in large oak barrels of 25 hectoliters. At the end of the production process, the bottles are filled and corked with a manual bottling machine, and once released to the market, they can still age for many years to achieve their perfect maturation. The tannic component and vibrant freshness make this red wine highly age-worthy.

In Mauro Franchino's Gattinara, the nobility of Nebbiolo is cloaked in an aura of ancient charm, blowing from a distant past, carrying with it the autumn leaves. The typical and elegant aromatic nuances of violets, faded red flowers and small fruits in a jam coexist with earthy hints of dried leaves, underbrush, roots, humus, coffee, and liquorice. It does not deny its rural origin on the palate either, offering a robust and structured sip, very flavorful and persistent, with great savouriness and vibrant freshness, accompanied by pleasant and expressive mineral notes. Its austere and introverted character sometimes requires patience and attention, but it's an effort that ultimately proves incredibly rewarding, satisfying the senses.
