Banfi
Banfi is a reality whose roots lie in the soul of two Italian-American brothers, John and Harry Mariani. The winery was established at their behest in Montalcino in 1978, with the desire to create a modern estate where quality, quantity, and tradition can coexist. Alongside the two brothers, at the beginning of the Banfi wine adventure, we find Ezio Rivella, a prominent oenologist in the Italian landscape, who immediately understood the great potential of the project carried out by John and Harry. Two brothers truly in love with wine, so much so that in 1979 they decided to expand their boundaries by purchasing the Bruzzone winery in Piemonte. Today it is run by cousins James and Cristina, representatives of the third generation of the Mariani family at the helm of a reality that produces as many as 10 million bottles each year.
The estate of Castello Banfi is a true empire that extends in Toscana for almost three thousand hectares, of which a third is dedicated to viticulture. The vineyards, in addition to being within the prized terroir of Montalcino, also extend into interesting areas of Maremma and Chianti Classico. A true puzzle of different soils, each with its specific conformation. What unites the work in each of the vineyards is the desire to have a sustainable production chain. For this reason, for example, lighter bottles are used, which allow for less impact on the amount of recycled glass to be used and save energy at every stage of transport. Similarly, great attention is paid to micro-irrigation, which allows for a significant saving of water. We are talking about sustainability, but not only that. Research also plays an important role for this production reality, which after years of studies on the clonal selection of Sangiovese and on the zoning of each single vineyard, has dedicated its efforts to the creation of fermentation tanks made of steel and wood, to get the best from both materials. A true novelty in the world of oenology, which takes the name of "Horizon", and which allows the different grape varieties to express themselves to the fullest potential.
The Banfi winery produces a wide range of products each year that, from Maremma to Chianti Classico, reach Montalcino, before taking flight towards Piemonte. A collection of labels that unite the tradition of different territories with the experience of the winery, creating prestigious bottles that are always in step with the times. To give you an evening dedicated to quality, you can delve into that terroir from which everything originated, Montalcino: The Brunello Riserva "Poggio all'Oro" will take you into a dimension that is nothing short of dreamlike.
