Cascina degli Ulivi - Bellotti

In the territory of the municipality of Novi Ligure, in the province of Alessandria and located on the border between Liguria and Piemonte, the wine company “Cascina degli Ulivi” was born in 1977. Of the 22 hectares of land owned, about ten hectares are planted with vines and another ten or so are dedicated to the rotational production of wheat and forage. On the property, cattle and small farm animals are raised, and there is also a farmhouse where you can enjoy local specialties while tasting the wines from the cellar.

The owner, Stefano Bellotti, dove into this fascinating project when he was just 18 years old and owned only one hectare of land, and since then, through hard work and his passion for rural life, along with the help of his first mentor Pietro Toccalino, his neighbor, he has made giant strides. The “Cascina” almost immediately embraced organic methods and in 1984 the biodynamic method; in the vineyards, the “herbaceous cover cropping” is practiced, a natural system to make fertile the lands rich in acidic-iron clays, minimizing the use of chemicals as much as possible, all the wines produced by the cellar bear the “triple A” label and are certified Agrobiodinamica and Bios. As the years went by, Stefano realized that his radical philosophy, aimed at the protection of the land and its integrity, is also upheld by great producers like Alfredo Roagna, a historic name in Barbaresco, Luigi Brezza, the first biodynamic winemaker, and the Alsatian master Pierre Frick.

Stefano Bellotti, who passed away a few years ago, is still remembered today as one of the pioneering and most important figures in biodynamic agriculture and the world of artisanal wine. His wines, born from spontaneous fermentation without the use of sulfites, represent a starting point for discovering the true natural essence of wine. Before leaving us, Stefano bought an old abandoned farmhouse on the nearby hills, with 2 hectares of surrounding vineyards, where Timorasso, a typical grape variety of this region of Piemonte, was planted; here Stefano dreamed of creating a great educational-agricultural project to spread, especially among young people, the culture and love for agriculture and viticulture. Among his greatest wines, we highlight the Filagnotti and the Montemarino, the two historic bottles of Cascina degli Ulivi.
