La Piotta
The production reality of La Piotta offers still, sparkling, and sparkling wines crafted according to practices in harmony with the balances of nature. The winery is located within the municipality of Montalto Pavese, in the heart of Oltrepò, a territory where in 1985 Luigi Padroggi, grandfather of the current owners, founded the estate following the footsteps of the family, which has been dedicated to viticulture for generations. Today the winery is run by the sons Gabriele and Mario, assisted by the young Enrico and Luca, grandchildren of Luigi, who supervises the management of the estate. Most likely, the name "Piotta" derives from the homonymous term in the Piedmont dialect meaning "stone", a rock of which the soils of the area are particularly rich. The influence of Piemonte is due to the fact that starting from the second half of the 19th century, the area saw a spread of Piedmontese settlements. La Piotta is part of FIVI, the Italian Federation of Independent Winemakers, an association that brings together producers who work in a completely independent limiting the use of additives in winemaking.
La Piotta is spread over 15 hectares of vineyards, represented by vines with an average age of 30 years. The climate is mild and temperate, characterized by significant temperature variations between day and night and influenced by the abundant presence of watercourses. The soil composition is quite heterogeneous, with variable presence of marls, sandy limestones, gypsum, and clay depending on the reference subzone. Based on these pedoclimatic parameters, the Padroggi family cultivates the varieties Pinot Nero, Pinot Grigio, Riesling Renano, Riesling Italico, Bonarda (local name for Croatina), Barbera, Uva Rara, and Moscato. In the winery, fermentations are carried out at controlled temperatures while for the sparkling wines the Ancestral Method, the Classic Method, or the Martinotti Method is used.
The varied production of the La Piotta winery is divided into 5 different selections: 'Tradizione 1985', 'Piota', 'Luigi Padroggi', '89/90', and 'Spumanti'. In general, it is of labels with a lively and dynamic taste that aim to express the potential of the viticultural territory of Oltrepò Pavese.
