Maison En Belles Lies
Through a refined artisanal style, the wines of the Burgundy wine estate Maison en Belles Lies are able to remain impressed in the mind and senses from the very first sip. We are in Saint-Aubin, in the renowned Côte de Beaune, a village where in 2002 Pierre Fenals founded his Domaine after decades spent in the fashion industry in Paris, driven solely by a deep passion for the world of wine. The French expression “belles lies”, literally “beautiful lees”, refers to a practice widespread in the 17th century among the monks of Burgundy that involved rubbing the barrels with the lees from the previous vintage. Following the dictates of certified organic farming and biodynamics, in just 3 hectares of vineyards owned by Pierre Fenals of Maison en Belles Lies, the traditional Burgundy grape varieties Pinot Noir, Gamay, Chardonnay, and Aligoté are cultivated. The soils on which the vines grow are mainly composed of clay and limestone, with the presence of gravel in some vineyards. The altitudes reach up to 320 meters above sea level, from the sea and in the cellar, Pierre Fenals follows a minimalist winemaking philosophy, with whole clusters of Pinot Noir vinified and fermentations always entrusted to indigenous yeasts. Stainless steel tanks and small French oak barrels of multiple uses are employed as wine containers, and the whites mature for long periods on the fine lees, without batonnage. Throughout the entire processing, recourse to clarification and filtration operations is excluded, as is the addition of sulfur, in total respect for the expression of the terroir. The limited production of the Burgundian winery Maison en Belles Lies consists of white and red wines of commendable class and purity, characterized by a refined mineral tone. The grapes destined for the Pierre Fenals labels come from the territories of Beaujolais and Côte de Beaune, specifically from villages such as Aloxe Corton and Maranges, but also Santenay, Corton, and Monthelie.
