Pico Re
History
Pico Re is a business centred around one wine: Lambrusco. This sparkling red is the wine of Emilia in the deepest sense: not just one of many regional specialities, but a deeply rooted tradition in the way people eat and socialise in this plain. Its history is rooted in the farming traditions of the Po Valley, where vines were planted along the rows of fields and sparkling wine was the natural companion to a rich and hearty cuisine. Pico Re interprets this tradition in the Parma area, a region that differs from those of Modena and Reggio Emilia in terms of altitude and a fresher, more savoury character, the result of cold nights and slow ripening.
Vineyards
Pico Re embodies both the Lambrusco of the plains and that of the hills: not only that of the lower Po Valley, where deep, fertile soils ensure abundant yields, but also that of the foothills of the Apennines, where the altitude and daily temperature variations slow down ripening and add aromatic complexity and acidity to the fruit. In the Parma area, this dual character is clearly evident: the hillside vineyards, with their clay-loam soils and good ventilation from the Apennines, produce grapes with good concentration and natural freshness – characteristics that result in lively, well-defined sparkling wines. It is a region distinct from those of Modena and Reggio Emilia, yet one with a distinct, fresh and vertical identity.
Vini
Pico Re produces Lambrusco in a variety of styles, staying true to the nature of a grape variety that can be many things at once. The flagship wines are sparkling wines produced using the Martinotti method, with a second fermentation in a pressure tank that preserves the fruity vigour and liveliness typical of the variety: in the glass, they display colours ranging from purple-red to rosé, with a fine, persistent mousse; aromas of small red berries, flowers and a delicate spicy note; and a fresh, savoury palate with a well-balanced residual sweetness that rounds out the wine without weighing it down. These wines are designed to accompany the best of Emilian cuisine, from cured meats to rich and flavourful first courses. Alongside these, the more approachable wines retain the same regional character but are intended for immediate, unpretentious enjoyment, true to the convivial nature of Lambrusco.
