Podere 414's Morellino di Scansano is a medium-bodied, smooth and fresh red wine, aged for 12 months in wood. Notes of red fruit and sweet spices complement fine, smooth tannins in a balanced and expressive structure, with good intensity and persistence
Morellino di Scansano from the Podere 414 winery is a wine that is for all intents and purposes among the prestigious reds of Tuscany. It is a symbol of the rougher Maremma Grossetana, a land with a very low impact of economic activities and an oasis closer to the idea of natural preservation, as it is considered by the European Union within the framework of the continent's prominent rural districts.
The result of subsistence farming, the landscape of the area can be considered as a photograph: static, preserved at the original level, very rough and wild, difficult to domesticate. The Sangiovese vines, accompanied by Ciliegiolo, tree-bred Alicante, Colorino and other native varieties, are located on hill ridges not too far from the sea. The artisanal dimension and the desire to respect the surrounding territory have led the winery to adopt organic management in the vineyard and the utmost care, so as not to distort the product, in the cellar. Before starting the actual winemaking work, the winery makes the Alicante undergo a light drying in the vineyard and the Ciliegiolo undergo carbonic maceration. Alcoholic fermentation occurs spontaneously in steel tanks and small wooden truncated conical vats, depending on the different grape varieties. Maceration on the skins varies from 15 to 20 days with frequent pumping over and manual delestages. The wine is aged in 25-hectoliter oak barrels and used barriques for 12 months.
Morellino di Scansano is ruby red in color to the eye. Hints of ripe fruit and spices are vividly noticeable on the nose. In the glass its Mediterranean character emerges, hints of licorice and vanilla notes are expressed. The palate has a broad attack, softened thanks to the passage in barrique, to soften the drinkability. It is fresh, harmonious and round, with fine tannins and slightly savory. Fruit of the earth: generous and irrepressible!
