Fratelli Alessandria
Fratelli Alessandria is a family reality that has its roots in the very history of Barolo and in the artisanal traditions of the Langhe. Originally born as Fratelli Dabbene, the winery's headquarters was founded as far back as the end of the 18th century, with the house still inhabited by the current owners. Already in 1843, the company started by Giuseppe Dabbene won two medals at the “Primaria Adunanza della Società Agraria”, a competition held in Pollenzo by King Carlo Alberto. Clementina, the last heir of the Dabbene family, married Carlo Alessandria in 1893, marking the handover: although the nickname “Prinsiòt”, little prince, suggests he was an only child, the winery's name transforms into Fratelli Alessandria. Gian Battista, along with his brother Alessandro and wife Flavia, represents the seventh generation of the family, while their son Vittore, the eighth generation of winemakers, has already entered the business.
The heritage of Fratelli Alessandria is represented by the vineyards that extend over a surface of about 15 hectares, divided among the areas most dedicated to the red wines of the Verduno territory: Monvigliero can rightly be considered the Grand Cru of the municipality, composed of a pure expression of the Sant’Agata Fossili marls. San Lorenzo, Rocche dell’Olmo, and Pisapola are all cultivated with Nebbiolo, while on the slopes of Neirane, Campasso, and Riva Rocca, Dolcetto, Barbera, and the emblematic Pelaverga appear, which constitutes the symbolic denomination of Verduno. In the Boscatto vineyards, the Favorita can finally be found, the only white grape grown on the estate, and moving to the municipality of Monforte d’Alba, one encounters the Nebbiolo and Barbera plot of Gramolere. The situation is very varied and composes an interesting mosaic of altitudes, ranging from 470 to 240 meters, of exposures, varying from southwest to full east, and naturally of soils, from fine white marls to significant sandy presence: the soils are characterized by the important presence of outcropping gypsum capable of reaching 20 meters in depth.
The Fratelli Alessandria winery is a historic reality linked to the creation of Barolo: the crus Monvigliero, San Lorenzo, and Gramolere are vinified separately, while the blending of the different vineyards constitutes the Barolo of the Municipality of Verduno. The harvests are carried out manually and following the seasonalities of the past, in late October. The wine operations are extremely traditional, with prolonged fermentations and macerations, aging in large Slavonian barrels, and long rests in the bottle.
