Spatburgunder Wageck 2017

Wageck’s Spätburgunder is a German Pinot Noir produced with French sensitivity. This terroir of the Palatinate is reminiscent of Burgundy, so the Pfaffmann family decided to operate with techniques of that area: low yields reducing yields, iron attention in the vineyard and spontaneous fermentation. The result is a very complex wine, agile but certainly not light. To the nose, hints of black fruits, sweet spices and hazelnut are really surprising. To the palate earthy hints on the finish give pleasant intensity, then fine tannins and lively freshness entice another sip

SPATBURGUNDER WAGECK 2017 DESCRIPTION

Weingut Wageck's Spatburgunder is produced in the small village of Bissersheim in the Pfalz region of western Germany. The winery is family-run, and for five generations the Wageck family has worked the grapes with respect and a love for the tradition. Today, Frank and Thomas share the working philosophy "quality is created in the vineyard" in the belief that only careful and passionate work and a re-evaluation of the ancient grapes native to this area are the ingredients for excellent quality wines.

The pure Pinot Noir grapes of Weingut Wageck's Spatburgunder grow on soil predominantly composed of limestone, which gives great finesse to the structure of the final product. The exposure of the vineyards is south/southeast, an ideal position for the sun's rays to constantly hit the grapes, ensuring perfect ripeness of the grapes at harvest time. The climate is continental with hot, sultry summers and cold, snowy winters. Harvesting is by hand with selection in the vineyard of the best bunches resulting in a low, but excellent yield. In the cellar, alcoholic fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in wood and aging a few months in oak barrels.

To the eye, the color of Weingut Wageck's Spatburgunder is a ruby red with bright highlights; the bouquet of aromas ranges from herbaceous to black pepper and roasted nutty notes on the finish. The palate reveals an elegant and fine structure with a presence of well-integrated and pleasant tannins with herbaceous notes on the finish. It is excellent with traditional red meat cuts, game and stewed white meats; interesting with aged cheeses. A table wine, to be consumed with the family for cheerful and carefree get-togethers, sipping a wine with genuine flavors in the glass.
