ETNA ROSSO 'SUL VULCANO' DONNAFUGATA 2019 DESCRIPTION

Donnafugata's Etna Rosso "Sul Vulcano" is made from Nerello Mascalese grapes and a small percentage of Nerello Cappucco, partially aged in wood, which preserves the elegant fruity fragrance typical of this variety, combined with the characteristic savoury and mineral notes of the precious Mongibello volcanic soils.

"Sul Vulcano" from the Sicilian winery Donnafugata is an Etna Rosso produced on the estate located on the northern slope of the volcano, in the territories of Randazzo and Passopisciaro. Some of the vineyards are cultivated according to ancient alberello practices, at an altitude of around 750 metres above sea level. The soils, with a prevalent sandy component of a volcanic nature, and the cool climate, with large temperature swings between day and night, help bring the grapes to the perfect ripeness, with an intense and refined character. After manual harvesting, with the selection of the best bunches in the vineyard, further sorting takes place in the cellar on the vibrating table. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 25 °C. The wine matures for 14 months, partly in steel vats and partly in second or third-passage French oak barriques, and ends its ageing process with 7 months in the bottle before being released on the market.

Donnafugata's 'Sul Vulcano' red is a label that well expresses Etna wines, characterised by elegant and fresh profiles. We are, in fact, faced with the peculiarity of a mountain viticulture practised in the centre of the Mediterranean, in a microclimate that is truly unique in the world. The wine has a soft, brilliant ruby red colour. To the nose it's reminiscent of floral scents, officinal herbs, aromas of small berries, slightly spicy hints and mineral sensations. The palate is medium-bodied, with dense, fine tannins, delicate fruit and a savoury, refreshing finish.
