Château Sociando Mallet

The wine company Chateau Sociando Mallet was created by Jean Gautreau in 1969. In his youth, Jean had dedicated himself to selling low-cost Bordeaux wines for export to Africa. Business went well, and when in 1956 the prices of Bordeaux wines rose significantly, he decided to turn to richer and more profitable countries like Belgium and the Netherlands. The real turning point in his life came in 1969 when Jean, looking for an estate on behalf of a Belgian client, discovered Chateau Sociando Mallet, in the municipality of Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, north of Pauillac, in the heart of Medoc; the vineyard does not exceed 5 hectares, has old plants mistreated by previous owners, but is located in a beautiful area, on the estuary of the Gironde and enjoys a beautiful view of the river and the surrounding countryside, Jean fell in love with it and bought it for 250,000 francs.

The building is in very poor condition, there is no cellar and there are only a few barrels in a garage, but little by little Jean begins the restoration work of the castle and the reorganization of the vineyard, and with the help of Gerard Cler, alreadyemployed at the Chateau, vinifies the first vintage, which reveals to him the exceptional nature of the terroir.

Today the "domaine" extends over 110 hectares, of which 85 are planted with vines, 48% with Sauvignon, 47% with Merlot, and the remaining 5% with Cabernet Franc, the three grape varieties that, blended in skillful proportions, provide the Bordeaux of Chateau Sociando Mallet that well represents the great wines of Medoc.
