CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA 'POGGIO A'FRATI' ROCCA DI CASTAGNOLI 2017 DESCRIPTION

Rocca di Castagnoli's Chianti Classico Riserva "Poggio A'Frati" is one of the most representative labels of this historic estate in Gaiole in Chianti. It is the expression of a single parcel, named after the convent of monks present in the area centuries ago. The vineyard has always yielded high quality grapes, thanks to the altitude and highly suitable soils. Excellent raw material is followed by careful and meticulous vinification, which brings out all the value of this prized area of Chianti. It is a wine for ageing, which goes very well with roast game or barbecued red meat.

The "Poggio A'Frati" Chianti Classico Riserva by Rocca di Castagnoli, is produced with Sangiovese and Canaiolo grapes that come exclusively from the cru of the same name. This plot covers an area of about 15 hectares and is considered one of the best on the estate. The vines are between 10 and 35 years old and are located at an altitude of 500 metres above sea level, with rows facing east-west. The soils are of medium texture, on a predominantly calcareous matrix and are very rich in 'alberese', which makes them stony and very well drained. The grapes are harvested in the second half of October and are quickly brought to the cellar where fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of around 28 °C, with maceration on the skins for a dozen days. The ageing period lasts 15 months in tonneaux and large barrels, 6 months in steel tanks and ends with 12 months in the bottle.

The Chianti Classico Riserva "Poggio A'Frati" Rocca di Castagnoli is a prestigious version of the classic wine of the area. To the eye, it has a luminous ruby colour, intense and brilliant. Elegant and rich, it expresses a bouquet characterised by aromas of ripe cherries, small red berries, hints of vanilla, delicate spices, aromatic herbs of the Mediterranean maquis, alongside sensations of undergrowth and humus. Harmonious and ample, it has dense tannins that are well integrated with palpable juiciness, enhanced by beautiful tertiary evolutions, which accompany it towards a fresh and very persistent finish.
