GRANACCIA 'GIGO' BIO VIO 2021 DESCRIPTION

The Granaccia "Gigo" from the Bio Vio winery is a fragrant and fruity red wine, which is produced in the Albenga area, in the heart of the Riviera Ligure di Ponente. It comes from the pure Spanish Garnacha grape variety, which arrived in Liguria during the 18th century, thanks to trade with the Iberian peninsula. It is one of the most widely cultivated red grape varieties in the world and has adapted very well to the terroir of this narrow strip of land between the sea and the Apennine mountains. It is a young and immediate version, made with the intention of leaving the rich fruity notes characteristic of the variety in the foreground.

The red Granaccia "Gigo" comes from the estate of Giobatta Vio, who, in addition to producing aromatic herbs, is also successfully dedicated to viticulture. The entire property is managed under organic farming, without chemicals' use. The company's philosophy is based on the valorisation of the territory, with the cultivation of grapes that have been present in Liguria for centuries only: Pigato, Vermentino, Rossese and Granaccia. The wines have a typically artisanal character, they are direct and immediate and express the varietal personality of the grapes with extraordinary candor. The vineyards of Granaccia are located in the countryside of Bastia d'Albenga, at an altitude of about 100 metres above sea level, on clay soils. After the harvest, fermentation takes place in steel vats, with maceration on the skins and daily pumping over. Prior to release, the wine matures for 4 months in steel vats and ends its refinement with a few months in the bottle.

The "Gigo" Bio Vio is a a straightforward and simple Granaccia, made to showcase a very special, fresh and marine version of this famous red berry variety. It is the protagonist of great wines in Spain, in the south of France, in the southern area of the Rhone Valley and in Sardinia, under the name Cannonau, it has adapted well to the Ligurian climate, expressing wines of an excellent level. In the glass it is ruby red in colour, with youthful violet hues. The aromas are a rich explosion of small berries, blueberry, currant and raspberry, accompanied by a light, soft spiciness. Consistent with the olfactory characteristics, the sip is crisp, with a fine tannic texture and a harmonious finish. Fresh and juicy, it is a particularly versatile red in table pairings.
