Ronc dal Diaul

Ronc dal Diaul is a Friulian winery located near Cividale, a beautiful village that retains the charm of the vestiges of a long history within its ancient walls. The origins of Cividale date back to Roman times. Founded by Julius Caesar under the name Forum Iulii, it later became an important Lombard center and then part of the Patriarchate of Aquileia. The estate takes its name from two typical words of the territory: Ronc, which in Friulian indicates a hill or a vineyard slope, while Diaul refers to one of the most famous monuments in Cividale. The famous Devil's Bridge or Puìnt dal Diàul is an ancient stone bridge with two arches built in 1442. This architectural work, perched above a deep limestone gorge, connects the two banks of the Natisone and serves as a true gateway to Cividale del Friuli.

The area has always been very suited for vine cultivation, which has been present in this region since the time of Roman colonization and has been passed down to the present day. Even today, the landscapeof the Colli Orientali area, which extends from Cividale towards the nearby Slovenian border, is characterized by orderly rows covering the gentle hilly slopes. The beautiful sunny exposures, in fact, enjoy a climate particularly favorable to viticulture. The reliefs of the Giulian Prealps form a natural barrier that protects the entire area from disturbances and cold currents descending from the northeast. The proximity of the Adriatic Sea helps to moderate temperatures with its constant breezes. The presence of good temperature excursions allows the grapes to reach maturity with very rich aromatic profiles.

In addition to ideal climatic conditions, the area also boasts particularly suited soils. The soils are of ancient Eocene origin. They consist of sedimentations from marine bottoms that have transformed over millennia into flysch or ponca in Friulian, that is, into layers of sandstone and limestone, stony and friable. They are poor and very draining soils, particularly suitable for quality viticulture. In this magnificent context, the Meregalli Group and Joe Bastianich decided to create a new project, giving life to the Ronc dal Diaul estate. The property extends over 10 hectares and is managed under organic farming practices. The cultivated grape varieties are the classic ones of the area: Friulano, Malvasia, Ribolla Gialla, Schioppettino, Refosco, and the wines are a faithful reflection of a terroir with great traditions.
