Feudo d'Ugni
Feudo d’Ugni is a small winemaking reality from Abruzzo, driven by the feminine spirit of Cristiana Galasso. Here, at the foot of the imposing Majella, the second highest mountain range in the Apennines, in 2001 takes place the unaware and affectionate return to the land of Cristiana. Blue eyes, flushed cheeks, genuine gaze, passionate studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in L’Aquila, and today an autonomous and self-sufficient winemaker in Abruzzo. Shy and reserved, she lowers her eyes when she speaks, but she has a good heart. Cristiana Galasso lives and interprets the winemaker's craft, not under the spotlight, but closely in touch with the land.
Today for Cristiana making wine at Feudo d’Ugni means keeping alive in the present the craft started (and unfortunately never finished) by her father, on a small plot of land in the hill surrounding San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore. With her manual gesture, marked by the daily rhythm of sun and rain, she keeps alive, materializing it at every moment, an abstract memory from the past. She comes from the world of art and graphic design, but the call of the land is felt and the need to respond positively is stronger than any other possible path. She is a wine artist and as such she cultivates artistically, at the foot of the Apennines, varieties such as Malvasia, Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, and Gewürztraminer, all mixed in the vineyard, as was done in the past, in a mix of heterogeneous conviviality, with minimal treatments and only with copper and sulfur. When everyone is eager to enhance indigenous grape varieties, she dares with unusual and atypical blends for Abruzzo, vinifying them white with skin maceration. At the same time, she makes room for typical local grapes such as Montepulciano and Trebbiano, which she vinifies in purity, preferring the concrete tank to the cold and bland steel tank. Her Montepulciano comes from her best vineyards and plays on earthy materiality, on Mediterranean sentiment, on the territoriality unique to Abruzzo, able to combine the air of the Apennines with the sea breezes. Her wines are vividly concentrated with sanguine and visceral territoriality, The aromas are Mediterranean and earthy, with an intense and visceral soul, capable of embracing the walls of the belly and vibrating to the heart.
