Mellot Alphonse

The Domaine Alphonse Mellot is located in Sancerre, in the eastern area of the great vineyard of the Loire Valley, in one of the regions famous for producing whites of extraordinary finesse and expressive freshness based on Sauvignon Blanc. The vineyard extends over the slope of a magnificent sunny hill. At the top, about 300 meters above sea level, lies the ancient village of Sancerre, which overlooks the splendid landscape and the Loire River. The culture of the vine arrived in these lands with Roman domination following the conquest of Gaul and has remained alive over the centuries to this day. As local archives testify, the Mellot family has been present in Sancerre since the 16th century.

At that time, the domaine Mellot was engaged in cultivating vineyards and trading wines. Its fame was so established that in 1698, the sovereign Louis XIV chose César Mellot as an advisor in the field of viticulture. By the end of the 19th century, Mellot managed a hotel in Sancerre and had a state license that allowed exporting wine internationally.

It was the beginning of a commercial expansion process that led the maison to be appreciated worldwide for the quality of its wines. Despite significant growth, the Domaine Alphonse Mellot has managed to maintain a family character, passed down through generations, which is expressed in a traditional savoir-faire both in vineyard management and in cellar practices.

The vineyards of the Alphonse Mellot estate are characterized by the presence of very suitable soils for the cultivation of Sauvignon Blanc, the flagship grape of the area. They are located in the heart of the denomination and their roots sink into Kimmeridgian limestone soils, in the marls of Saint Doulchard, in the limestone of Buzançais or in clayey soils rich in silica. The climate is continental with significant thermal excursions between day and night, mitigated only by the presence of the Loire basin. Agronomic management is carried out with great care, through work on the soils to promote their natural vitality. The roots are forced to

descend deeply to seek water and nutrients, insinuating themselves between the cracks of the limestone bedrock. The harvests take place at full fruit maturity and the wines express the sapidity and the mineral notes of flint typical of the terroir.
