Antica Farmacia Clementi

Antica Farmacia Clementi represents an Italian excellence in the world of liqueurs and boasts ancient roots. To tell its story, we must go back to 1884, the year when Dr. Giuseppe Clementi, an expert botanist, created the recipe for “China Clementi” in his pharmacy in Fivizzano, in the province of Massa Carrara, a unique elixir made from 2 prized varieties of tropical China, Cinchona Calisaya and Cinchona Succirubra, bitter orange peels, medicinal herbs, sugar, and alcohol: all expertly measured. The China, from the Inca term “Kinia,” meaning bark, is an evergreen plant native to the Amazon region of the Andes and spread in Europe by Jesuits. Thanks to the therapeutic properties of the alkaloids present in its bark, this plant has been used in herbal medicine for centuries.

To produce its liqueur, Antica Farmacia Clementi grinds the China, then puts it in an alcoholic solution along with the other ingredients. It then adds high-quality alcohol and sugar. Once obtained, the liqueur is aged for 24 months in steel barrels with the soleras method and is characterized by an amber color, intense aroma, rich and smooth flavor.

Even today, China Clementi is produced according to the original recipe and is used by some of the world's most famous bartenders in their cocktails. The qualities of this liqueur are also evidenced by the gold medal received at the international agricultural-industrial exhibition in Rome in 1911.
