Atavus

Atavus is a Spanish winery that has been involved in viticulture for more generations in the splendid territory of Priorat. The property is located in the deep hilly inland of Tarragona, in one of the most interesting and vocated areas of the entire Iberian Peninsula, thanks to particularly favorable pedoclimatic conditions. Its ancient origins have allowed it to carry forward values and cultivation methods inspired by the past, a savoir-faire passed down through time as a true corporate heritage. Although firmly anchored in the present and projected into the future, the winery continues to look to the experience of tradition, which is circularly connected to new environmental sensitivities based on the principles of sustainability, respect, and protection of nature. For this reason, Atavus has set itself the ambitious goal of being the first completely sustainable winery in all of Priorat.

The philosophy is inspired by a return to ancient customs, seeking to put the new agronomic knowledge at the service of ancestral tradition and winemaking. The estate is located in Gratallops and covers a total of 17 hectares, of which only 6 are dedicated to vines, within an environmental context that is still wild and rich in biodiversity. The region is crossed by the Siurana River, which guarantees water supply to the entire area. The soils are poor and stony, fundamentally composed of slate flakes locally called "licorella". They are shallow soils, resting directly on the bedrock, very suitable for viticulture that aims for low natural yields. Only in the lowest area, closest to the riverbed, the soils are more clayey, with the presence of alluvial deposits of gravel and pebbles.

The vineyards are mostly cultivated on terraces supported by dry stone walls and are managed according to the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture, without any use of chemical products. Within the estate, the historical varieties of the region have been planted, Garnacha negra and blanca, Cariñena, Pedro Ximenez, Macabeo in addition to some international grapes introduced in the '80s such as Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the countryside, the operations are carried out manually, always trying to bring the vine towards its natural vegetative and productive balance. Even in the winery, very simple winemaking protocols are used, always respectful of the high quality of the grapes, with the aim of producing straightforward and authentic wines.
