Bakhia Nika

The Nika Bakhia winery is located in Ananga in the famous Kakheti area, in the eastern region of Georgia. It is one of the areas in the world that boasts some of the oldest origins in viticulture. The first domestication of the vine took place right in the lands of the Fertile Crescent and the Caucasus. It is here that we still find the most ancient winemaking customs and an extraordinary ampelographic richness, with ancient grape varieties of great potential. Nika Bakhia was born to introduce these precious traditions to the world, producing wines with local grape varieties and still using the methods passed down through generations over the centuries.

The founder of the winery is a sculptor and architect, who in 2006 decided to dedicate himself to the world of wine, in search of the authentic roots of his country. From the beginning, he decided to revive the oldest winemaking processes, using the Qvevri Georgian, a large terracotta container similar to the Dolium Roman. From his initiative, the Qvevri Association was also born to promote and raise awareness of wines made in terracotta containers. The estate covers a total area of 6-7 hectares, cultivated without the use of herbicides or other chemical agents, in full respect of the natural environment. All the work between the rows is done manually and with the help of a horse, which does not compact the soil, keeping it soft and vital.

Faithful to the history of the territory, the Nika Bakhia winery has chosen to cultivate only the ancient grape varieties that have been present in the region for millennia, recovering and seeking to enhance the indigenous vines: Saperavi, Rkatsiteli, Tavkveri, Khikhvi, and Mstvane. These are grapes rich in history, allowing for the tasting of wines with a ancient and original taste. The winemaking takes place with long macerations on the skins inside the classic Qvevri, and the same containers are also used for aging. Thus, wines of great expressive purity are born, faithful to the varietal characteristics of the grapes, with a

straightforward and genuine profile. Authentic wines that speak of history and terroir.
