Barbacan
Barbacan is a small family-run winery in Valtellina that has deep roots in the history of the territory. Its production is essential and of extreme territorial typicity, well summarized by the combination of Chiavennasca and Alps. The rigorous and traditionalist approach, inspired by the historical and cultural identity of the steep and rocky Valtellinese terraces, is evident from the name of this artisanal reality, which, in the local dialect, refers to the supporting walls of some old buildings present among the vineyards.
The Barbacan winery is managed by the winemaker Angelo Sega and his sons Luca and Matteo, who independently handle all phases of production, from the heroic cultivation of vines on steep alpine slopes to bottling. The family vineyards are located in the hamlet of San Giacomo di Teglio, in the heart of the Valgella subzone, covering a total of 7 hectares arranged on traditional terraced slopes. The best plots of this micro property are those identified by the toponyms Söl and Piza Mej, true company crus, located at about 500 meters above sea level. In complete respect for traditions and the ecosystem, the vineyard approach involves the use of low quantities of copper and sulfur, only when necessary, avoiding not only pesticides and herbicides but also fertilization and irrigation. In the winery, fermentations occur spontaneously in steel and concrete tanks, utilizing only indigenous yeasts, and for aging, large oak barrels are preferred. Only extremely moderate amounts of added sulfur are used before bottling.
The wines of Barbacan are capable of expressing in a direct and profound way the extraordinary winemaking reality of Valtellina. They are born from Chiavennasca grapes, the typical grape of the Valtellinese mountains, and other varieties such as Róssola, Pignola, Chiavennaschino, Brugnola, Negrera, Treunasca, Róssolino Rosa, Bressana, and Chiavennasca Bianca, which together constitute the great legacy of generations of Valtellinese winemakers and an enormous heritage in terms of biodiversity and richness.cultural, on which the Sega family has initiated a recovery and safeguarding plan also in favor of other producers who may need it. The red wines produced, from the convivial and easy-drinking Rosso and Rosato to the austere Sol, Jazpèmi, Livèl, and Fracia, are vibrant and lively expressions, with an energy that speaks of both ancient roots and a free and courageous passion. The desire to rediscover and savor the archetypes of the territory through the rigorous typicity of the produced wines is clearly manifested in the labels, which reproduce the rock engravings left by the ancient peoples of the Neolithic. The labels indeed seem to evoke prehistoric images and the primary paradigms of a territory that, in the glass, reveals part of its deepest secrets.
