Barbaglia Sergio
In the heart of the Boca production area, a prestigious denomination of Alto Piemonte, lies the small family-run winery Barbaglia Sergio, a gem of the region's winemaking. The winery is located precisely in the municipality of Cavallirio, in the pre-Alpine area at the foot of Monte Rosa, where in 1946 Mario Barbaglia started the winemaking business by founding the estate with the initial name Antico Borgo dei Cavalli, the Latin toponym of Cavallirio, an ancient site of equine breeding in the Novarese. In 1977, his son Sergio took over the winery, bringing his expertise as a rigorous oenologist and adopting a production approach that is generally traditional, while still embracing the rational contribution of innovative technology. Currently, the estate is carried forward in synergy by Sergio and his daughter Silvia Barbaglia, a passionate and experimental oenologist.
The vineyard area available to the Sergio Barbaglia estate is just over 6 hectares, mainly reserved for Nebbiolo, locally called Spanna, combined with smaller percentages of other traditional grape varietiesVespolina, Uva Rara, Croatina, and Erbaluce. The rows, distributed in many small plots scattered across different areas, rest on acidic volcanic soils, rich in porphyry and mineral elements, and are positively influenced by the area's cool climate. The harvest is carried out entirely by hand, and in the winery, fermentations take place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. For the reds, the subsequent aging periods mostly occur in tonneau and large oak barrels.
The wines from the Barbaglia Sergio winery stand out for their freshness and elegance, as well as their energetic mineral vein born from the volcanic territory of Alto Piemonte. In particular, the estate's labels are distinguished by fruity, spicy, and pleasantly sanguine aromas, especially noticeable in the Boca, the pride of the Barbaglia family, produced through a traditional blend of Nebbiolo and Vespolina. In addition to the reds of the Boca and Colline Novaresi denominations, the winery produces delightful white wines and Metodo Classico sparkling wines.
