Berta
Berta is a historic Piedmontese grappa distillery that has its roots in the distant 1947, when Paolo Berta, son of a winemaker from Mombaruzzo, founded the first distillery in Nizza Monferrato, to add the offer of distillates to his father's wine production. Against the expansion of large distribution and the offer of industrial and low-quality grappas, the Berta distillery asserts itself in the market with artisanal products of the highest quality, linked to ancient traditions. The distillery remains in the hands of the children and new generations of the Berta family and in 2002 moved to the family's place of origin, in the locality of Casalotto di Mombaruzzo. Today the Berta distillery is run by the fourth generation of the family and continues to represent an Italian symbol of quality grappa in the world.
The pomace from every region of Italy is kept fresh and moist in hermetically sealed 200 kg food-grade plastic containers. Here the pomace ferments and a small vent valve allows the escape of carbon dioxide; the vacuum created inside the container favors the perfect preservation of the raw material to be distilled, which thus remains very fresh until spring. The fermented pomace then ends up in the baskets of the steam-powered stills and begins a rigorous distillation process that favors quality over quantity. The grappa produced rests in stainless steel containers and then, if necessary, in wooden barrels placed in large underground warehouses.
