Bodega Mara
Bodega Mara de Uco represents a project initiated by Argentine producer Ernesto Catena between the wine regions of Mendoza and Patagonia. For Ernesto, an Italian-born winemaker and the eldest son of Nicolas Catena Zapata, owner of the famous Catena Zapata winery, making wine is a true form of art. With this fundamental belief, he has launched a series of wine ventures seeking the best habitats for each grape variety and collaborating with small growers who adhere to the principles of organic and biodynamic farming. The name of this bodega comes from one of the mammals that characterize Argentine fauna: the Patagonian mará, or Patagonian hare, which is also depicted on all the labels.
Part of the vineyards of Mara de Uco, cultivated in respect of nature's cycles with a view to absolute sustainability, are located at over 1,300 meters above sea level. The winery's production is based on the black grape varieties Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Bonarda. The first grape variety is grown in Patagonia, where the the particularly cool climate is ideal for bringing out all the juicy and fragrant character of Pinot Noir. The other grapes are instead grown in the renowned wine region of Mendoza. Beyond the area in question, all harvests are carried out by hand, while the vinifications involve spontaneous fermentations at controlled temperatures, without the use of fining.
Those produced by the Mara de Uco winery are expressions characterized by notable balance and purity, with a taste capable of combining typicity and internationality. Among the various labels produced by the bodega, the Pinot Noir 'Mara' from Patagonia is certainly one of the most peculiar and distinctive. Many industry insiders claim that, among all the wine regions of Argentina, this black grape variety of Burgundian origin manages to give life to its best expressions precisely in Patagonia. If you add to this the skilled hand of Ernesto Catena, success is assured.
