Boulard
The Maison Boulard represents an ancient family-run distillery dedicated to the production of Calvados of high quality under the prestigious denomination Calvados Pays d’Auge. It was Pierre-Auguste Boulard who founded this French production reality in 1825 in Coquainvilliers, in Lower Normandy. Boulard was the first Calvados distillery to integrate the entire production chain: from apple production to the double distillation process, passing through the elaboration of the base cider. The Maison was also a promoter of the creation dated 1942 of the AOC Calvados Pays d’Auge, a more prestigious and restrictive denomination compared to generic Calvados. Currently, it is Vincent, the fifth generation of the Boulard family, who runs the business with great passion and innovative spirit, backed by the talent of master distiller Sylvain Pluchard.
The production of the fine Calvados signed Boulard begins with the selection of apples grown exclusively in the territory of the Paysd’Auge, characterized by calcareous and clayey soils and a particularly humid climate. The apples count 120 different varieties attributable to four different families: the bitter ones, which provide structure, balance, and harmony; the sweet ones, rich in sugars; the sweet-bitter ones, which bring tannins; and finally the acidic ones, capable of imparting freshness. From the fermentation of apple juice, cider is obtained, which is then subjected to a double distillation through copper stills, a process of which the Maison has been a pioneer in the Calvados area. The subsequent aging phase takes place in French oak barrels and lasts for at least 24 months, which in the case of more complex and fine Calvados can even exceed 15 years.
The Calvados Pays d’Auge from Boulard are characterized by an intense amber color and possess a range of fruity, complex, and delicate aromas, a enveloping roundness, and an exceptional aging potential. A pride of the Maison are the Calvados ‘Grand Solage’, ‘VSOP’ and ‘XO’, expressions at the highest quality of their respective types awarded worldwide.
