Caggiano
Antonio Caggiano is one of those figures who has firmly contributed to enhancing the image of Irpinian wines, and particularly of Taurasi, in the world. The winery is located right within the municipality of Taurasi, in the Contrada Sala area, where in 1990 Antonio officially started his winemaking activity after dedicating years to photography around the globe, driven by the desire to highlight his beloved homeland. Today the estate is managed by his son Giuseppe with the consultancy of the renowned oenologist and university professor Luigi Moio. A special mention goes to the beautiful rooms carved into the stone, inside which rest tens of thousands of bottles, at optimal temperature and humidity values, surrounded by fascinating agricultural tools and implements. Furthermore, the Caggiano family manages a farmhouse located right next to the winery, bordered by vineyards and the green Irpinian landscape.
The hectares of vineyards cultivated by the Antonio Caggiano estate are 32, reserved for the native Campanian grape varieties Aglianico, Fiano, Greco, and Falanghina. These are rooted in hilly soils of clay-limestone origin, located between 350 and 600 meters above sea level. The harvest is carried out by hand in crates, and the winemaking containers used in the winery include stainless steel tanks and French oak barriques from Troncai, Center, and Vosges, whose use varies depending on the label in question. In general, the red grapes undergo intense macerations on the skins, aimed at extracting the territorial and varietal essence, with the wines subsequently undergoing complete malolactic fermentation to soften the natural roughness of Aglianico.
The labels produced by the Antonio Caggiano winery include the three major Irpinian denominations: Taurasi, Fiano di Avellino, and Greco di Tufo. Among these, the Taurasi ‘Vigna Macchia dei Goti’ stands out without a doubt, an Aglianico of extraordinary typicity and class, at the qualitative peak of the denomination. There are also white wines of remarkable finesse capable of expressing the typical mineral character of Irpinia.
