Caligaris Luca
Luca Caligaris is one of the most esteemed winemakers in Alto Piemonte. His winery was established in the late 1990s and began producing its first bottles in 2002. After completing traditional studies in oenology, Luca decided to carry on the family tradition in viticulture, enhancing the small heritage of vineyards, with the desire to create honest and authentic wines. It is a small artisanal activity, located within the ancient walls of the historic center of the village of Gattinara, one of the most famous places for the production of a great Nebbiolo outside the renowned territory of the Langhe.
The Luca Caligaris winery extends over just over two hectares in the area of Gattinara, with some parcels in the prized cru Ossi, always known for the excellent quality of its wines. For centuries famous for its red wines, Gattinara expresses a Nebbiolo with absolutely unique and particular characteristics. The cool, always breezy climate with significant temperature variations allows slow ripening of grapes rich in aromas. The soils are of ancient volcanic origin, characterized by the presence of porphyries rich in iron minerals. They are poor and draining soils, very suitable for quality viticulture. In these particular pedoclimatic conditions, Nebbiolo expresses itself with a more subtle and austere profile, characterized by typical savory and mineral notes, which constitute the stylistic hallmark of the wines from the area.
The management of the vineyards is conducted with the utmost attention to the environmental context, trying to limit treatments and drawing inspiration from the oldest traditions of the territory. The style of Luca Caligaris' wines is focused on a search for finesse and elegance, typical of a noble grape variety like Nebbiolo, with winemaking that carefully preserves the varietal characteristics of the grapes. Currently, the winery produces a Gattinara, a Gattinara Riserva, with grapes from the Cru Osso, a younger and more immediate Nebbiolo Coste della Sesia, and two wines dedicated to his two daughters: Rosa di Martina and Rosso di Sara. The wines of Luca Caligaris are particularly appreciated by enthusiasts in search of the authentic flavors of the territory.
