Camerlengo
Camerlengo is a winery in Basilicata that produces quality territorial wines and represents a reference wine-growing reality especially for lovers of Aglianico. Located in Rapolla, in the province of Potenza, the winery belonged to Giovanni Falaguerra, who produced wine and oil in this area since 1800. Antonio Cascarano, Giovanni's grandson, wanted to combine his profession as an architect with his passion for wine, recovering the old vineyards and his grandfather's cellar carved into the tuff.
The Camerlengo vineyard extends over 4 hectares on the slopes of Monte Vulture, an extinct volcano from prehistoric times that provides ideal soils and climate for viticulture: the vines grow on tuff soils rich in silicon and potassium, which give the grapes good acidity and the wine a pleasant freshness, and enjoy the temperate climate and strong temperature variations between day and night. The vineyard is divided into two sections: Piano di Croce, a terrace cultivated with Aglianico overlooking the nearby Barile, and Toppo d’Avuzzo, where Malvasia di Rapolla, Santa Sofia (clone of Fiano) and Cinguli. The management of the vineyard is organic, with the aim of preserving nature and its biodiversity and working in harmony with its rhythms. Monitoring in the vineyard is almost daily, with a preventive pest control system to keep the vineyard healthy. Antonio is against manipulations and additions both in the vineyard and in the cellar: fermentation on indigenous yeasts and soft pressing, no clarification or filtration.
Antonio is an engaging and positive character, and his wines are equally intense and explosive. His production goal is to allow Aglianico del Vulture to express its maximum potential, returning to natural agriculture and a cellar processing that takes advantage of the right times. The wines of Camerlengo show great character, they are wines to be waited for with patience and never taken for granted.
