Campogrande - Elio Altare

  1. CAMPOGRANDE - ELIO ALTARE

Campogrande is the wine project undertaken in 2005 in Liguria by the renowned Langhe producer Elio Altare, one of the famous Barolo Boys, in collaboration with his friend Antonio Bonanni, driven by the goal of producing a great white wine that conveys the essence of the Cinque Terre. Located in the charming municipality of Riomaggiore, the very small estate of Campogrande takes its name from the homonymous vineyard attached, which is so named because it represents the largest single terraced plot in the Cinque Terre. The winemaking room is located inside an ancient stone farmhouse, and the winery is now run by Elio and Silvia Altare along with Simone Bonanni, Antonio's nephew.

There are just 2 hectares of vineyards cultivated by the Campogrande – Elio Altare estate, dedicated exclusively to the native varieties Albarola and especially Bosco, arranged on terraces carved from steep rocky slopes that plunge into the Ligurian Sea. Due to the dizzying slopes, all the agronomic operations are carried out by hand, in a striking case of heroic viticulture. Furthermore, the use of herbicides, insecticides, and chemical fertilizers is strictly banned in the field, while in the winery the fermentations are spontaneous and the wines undergo neither clarification nor filtration. Following the harvest, the grapes are subjected to destemming and soft pressing, with the must thus obtained undergoing a slow alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, in contact with the skins for a few days. For the Cinque Terre, the subsequent maturation phase also takes place in steel for a few months, in order to preserve the freshness and primary and secondary aromas of the wine. Instead, the other white of the estate, ‘Telémaco’, matures for a short period also in barrique.

Cinque Terre Bianco and ‘Telémaco’ constitute the only two labels produced by the Campogrande – Elio Altare winery, two sides of the same coin capable of transporting the senses into the charm of the Cinque Terre. The production is artisanal and very limited and both wines are characterized by their richness and minerality.
