Carussin
For five generations, the Ferro family, the soul of the Carussin winery, has passed down the genuine peasant knowledge in the province of Asti, in Lower Piemonte, basing their production spirit on environmental sustainability. The Ferro family founded the estate in 1927 in San Marzano Oliveto, a municipality located between Nizza Monferrato and Canelli, and since 1984 the family has banned the use of synthetic chemical products following the principles of organic farming. Today, Bruna Ferro leads the estate with the support of her husband Luigi, always armed with passion, dedication, and enthusiasm. The couple loves to define their wines as “low anthropic impact”, an expression that well defines the family's philosophy, strongly determined to defend themselves from the homogenization of modern winery practices. The name of the winery comes from the nickname of the founder Major Ferro, who came from Calosso and thus calossese, in the Piedmont dialect “carussin”. In addition to wine production, the estate has a farm dedicated to donkeys and a craft brewery.
In its 20 hectares of vineyards, the Ferro family of the Carussin winery cultivates the traditional varieties of Lower Piemonte, namely Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Grignolino, Cortese, Favorita and, above all, Moscato Bianco and Barbera. Alongside organic farming, the production approach of the Bruno family is based on a biodynamic holistic vision, aiming to create a perfect balance between the vineyards, man, and the ecosystem. The harvest is carried out strictly by hand, and in the winery, the fermentations occur completely spontaneously in stainless steel tanks, cement vats, and fiberglass tanks, without temperature control. In the same type of containers, the masses remain to mature, except for some wines that age in small French oak barrels and in large casks.
The wines of the Carussin winery are configured as juicy and rustic interpretations of the territory, endowed with a frank and sincere personality, the same that guides the production of the Ferro family. In particular, the Barbera d’Asti and the various Moscato are the protagonists of the production, true territorial and varietal expressions.
