Casa Raia

Casa Raia is a small winery in Montalcino, located on a promontory west of the famous Tuscan village. It is an ancient estate from the 13th century, known by the name of Scarnacuoia and renamed Casa Raia by Ludmilla Temertey, who purchased the property in a state of semi-abandonment in 1997, captivated by the wild and unspoiled place, in the heart of one of the most famous wine regions in Tuscany. In 2006, Ludmilla's daughter, Kalyna Temertey Canta, and her husband Pierre Jean Monnoyer, began to restore the old vineyards on the estate with the intention of producing quality wines that can give voice to a land of great traditions and high vocation.

The estate covers 4.5 hectares, with some plots over 40 years old, used to produce Brunello. The soils are poor and stony, characterized by the abundant presence of galestro and dendrite rocks. The vineyards are cultivated at an altitude of 350-400 meters above sea level, in an area with a mild and temperate climate, always very breezy. In the countryside, the principles of certified organic farming and some biodynamic practices are followed, with the aim of preserving the natural balances of the ecosystem and promoting the rich natural biodiversity of the place. The ultimate goal of all the work in the vineyard is to obtain healthy and genuine grapes, with the awareness that only starting from a raw material of excellent quality is it possible to produce great wines with a typically territorial character.

The harvest takes place at full maturity, with manual grape picking and meticulous selection of the bunches, before proceeding to vinification. In the cellar, great care is taken to preserve the varietal characteristics of the grapes, trying to intervene as little as possible in the fermentation process, only assisting the transformation of the must into wine, using only indigenous yeasts. All cellar operations are carried out by gravity, so as not to stress the precious raw material by using pumps. Depending on the type, the wines mature in stainless steel tanks or in 30-hectoliter French oak barrels, hectoliters, in barriques and tonneaux. The barrels are carefully selected from those made with oak from the Allier forest by the cooperages Taransaud, Radoux, and Mittelberger.
