Castello Bonomi

In Coccaglio, a municipality at the south-western end of Franciacorta, stands the Castello Bonomi sparkling wine estate, a local excellence in the production of Metodo Classico sparkling wines, not surprisingly counted among the best in all of Franciacorta. The winery was founded in the 1980s, although the castle has been owned by the Bonomi family since 1910, when the family made it their country residence. It was Marino Bonomo who, in 1985, founded Tenuta Castellino and started the wine business, only after recovering the historic vineyard annexed to it and renovating the premises of an old arsenal built into the side of Monte Orfano, turning it into a wine cellar. Since 2008, the property has been in the hands of the Paladin family, who continue the passionate work of their predecessors by embracing a sustainable production vision.

Castello Bonomi's vineyards extend over approximately 30 hectares, conducted under a certified organic regime and dedicated to the Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Erbamat varieties, the latter recovered and enhanced also thanks to the work carried out by the estate, which contributed to its admission into the Franciacorta regulations in 2017. The vineyards grow on terraces on the southern slopes of Monte Orfano, where the soils are rich in limestone, gypsum and mineral substances, with altitudes of up to 275 metres above sea level. Compared to other areas of Franciacorta, the Coccaglio area has 20 per cent less annual rainfall and is characterised by a temperate climate, at times Mediterranean, ideal for the correct ripening of the grapes. Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand in a staggered manner, respecting the stage of ripeness of each parcel, vinified separately in order to enhance its identity. After frothing, carried out according to the Metodo Classico, the sparkling wines remain for long periods on the lees before disgorging.

Franciacorta wines by Castello Bonomi are appreciated for their elegant and balanced style, as well as for the mineral timbre that is always in evidence. In general, the range is quite varied, with rather low dosages ranging from Brut to Extra Brut, including Dosaggio Zero.
