Castello di Buttrio
Castello di Buttrio is a historical reality of the Colli Orientali, located on the Pampinutta hill, cultivated since the Middle Ages and still today the heart of the estate. The ancient castle, built in the 11th century and profoundly renovated during the 1600s, is the symbol of the estate. Since 1994 it has been part of the properties of Marco Felluga and is now managed by his daughter Alessandra, who represents the fifth generation of a great Friulian wine family. In the 1990s, the historic vineyards of the estate were recovered, a precious heritage to be preserved with care, and all the systems were renewed with a high density per hectare, in order to obtain high-quality grapes.
The estate extends in an area with a microclimate particularly suitable for vine cultivation. The chain of the Julian Alps protects the territory from the cold northern winds and the proximity of the Adriatic Sea helps to soften the temperatures with its constant breezes. The historic vineyards are located in the hilly area near the Castle and extend over about 10 hectares. They were planted in the 1940s with the indigenous grape varieties of the area and they plastically represent the history and tradition. Although having a low production, they are able to give exceptional quality grapes, characterized by great aromatic concentration and balance. The deep roots allow the plants to overcome even difficult vintages and periods of water stress. The rows are managed with extreme care, using mechanical weeding and short pruning.
The soils are of Eocene origin, consisting of flysch, or ponca in Friulano, that is sedimentations of sandstones and calcareous marls very rich in mineral substances. The particular habitat of the Colli Orientali area has always proven to be very suitable for the cultivation of white berry varieties, although red berry grapes are also present. The estate mainly cultivates the indigenous Ribolla Gialla, the international Friulano or Sauvignonasse, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and the reds Refosco dal peduncolo rosso, Pignolo and Merlot. The labels of Castello di Buttrio are the result of careful vinifications and represent clear and authentic expressions of the Friulian land.
