Castello di Spessa

Castello di Spessa represents one of the most well-known excellences of Friuli Venezia Giulia.  The origins of the winery date back to the late 1970s, when Loretto Pali purchased an estate of about 60 hectares in the Isonzo area, which still today constitutes the main core of the company and the most important production hub.  In 1987, the property expanded with the acquisition of Castello di Spessa and 28 hectares of vineyards located in the beautiful area of Collio Goriziano, on the hills of Capriva del Friuli. Today, the winery is able to offer a wide range of labels that represent the best terroirs of the region, interpreted with a refined style that focuses mainly on elegance and mineral freshness.

All the wines of Castello di Spessa are produced exclusively from owned vineyards, allowing for complete control of the supply chain from plant to bottle. The grapes come from the two estates: Isonzo and Collio. These are excellent terroirs that enjoy a privileged geographical placement. The Julian Alps shield the vineyards from disturbances coming from the northeast, and the breezes rising from the Adriatic coast help to mitigate the climate and ensure constant ventilation.privileged geographical area. The arc of the Julian Alps protects the vineyards from disturbances coming from the northeast, and the breezes rising from the Adriatic coast help to mitigate the climate and ensure constant ventilation. From a soil perspective, the two areas present significant differences. The soils of Collio are composed of marls and sandstones of Eocene origin, crumbly and rich in minerals. The soils of Isonzo are of alluvial origin, with a superficial layer of red earth resting on a deep substrate of pebbles and gravel.

The vineyards are managed with short pruning and low yields per hectare, in order to obtain few clusters with good aromatic concentration. The choice of grape varieties faithfully reflects the traditions of the area with: Ribolla Gialla, Friulano, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Nero, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. To preserve the richness and aromatic integrity of the grapes, the harvests take place at night, so that fresh and fragrant grapes can be brought to the winery and to avoid oxidation. The vinifications are conducted in a parcel manner, to highlight all the nuances of the territory, using gentle practices that are always respectful of grapes of excellent quality.
