Castorani

Podere Castorani is closely linked to the person of Jarno Trulli, who everyone will know more for his races in Formula 1 than for his strolls among the vines. After a successful career filled with podiums and fast laps in his single-seater, Jarno has returned to his roots. He, a true Abruzzese, born in Pescara, always passionate about wine, could only find fertile ground for his winemaking dreams in his homeland.

In 1998, Jarno took over the historic Castorani winery, well-rooted in the area since 1793, and in 2000 he signed his first personal harvest. This historic reality, equipped with an attached 18th-century villa, is located in the municipality of Alanno, in the province of Pescara, immersed in a truly enviable landscape. Surrounded by the Majella National Park on one side and the Adriatic Sea on the other, the owned vineyards enjoy excellent sun exposure and benefit from the night breezes coming from the mountains, which create interesting temperature excursions between day and night, giving particular uniqueness to the grapes. The soils here are originally clayey in nature, rich in depth skeleton, and the altitudes reach nearly 350 meters. The old plants are still trained with the traditional Abruzzese pergola, while for the new plantings, the guyot method has been preferred. The cultivated grapes are obviously those most typical of the area, with Montepulciano predominating, along with Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, Malvasia, Pecorino, Passerina, and the rare Cococciola playing their role among the white grape varieties.

Today, Podere Castorani has become significant and has established itself nationally and especially internationally, considering that about 90% of the entire production is sold abroad. Thanks to the fruitful winemaking consultancy of Angelo Molisani, the range has expanded over time, conquering different and increasingly demanding palates, experimenting with aging in 500-liter wooden barrels for the whites and playing with the evolution of Montepulciano.

If until recently there seemed to be no connection between the world of Formula 1 and that of winemaking, today, remembering this story,we can certainly change our minds!
