Engaged, among other products, in the production of Cava according to artisanal practices, the family-run wine business Casa Mariol is committed to enhancing the wine expression of Catalonia with its excellences. Founded in 1945 in Batea, within the wine area of Terra Alta, in the southern part of Catalonia, the winery is now led by the third generation of the family, represented by Josep Maria, Miguel Àngel, and Marta Vaquer. It was their grandparents, Josep Maria Bes and Josefina Aguiló, who started the wine selling activity in the area, while their parents Josep Vaquer and Emilia Llop, who took over management in 1971, were pioneers in introducing international varieties such as Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon to the region. In addition to Cava sparkling wines, the bodega produces still wines, vermouth, and liqueurs with a strong desire to reflect the uniqueness of the territory and the people who live there.
The Casa Mariol estate extends over 50 hectares vines, reserved for traditional varieties Macabeu, Xarel-lo, Parellada, Garnacha Blanca, Verdejo, Garnacha Tinta, Tempranillo, Samsó (the name that Carignano takes in Catalonia) and Trepat, as well as international varieties Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, all cultivated following a sustainable agronomic approach. The plants benefit from the characteristic dry Mediterranean climate of Terra Alta, the predominant limestone matrix of the soils, and the constant presence of the dry wind Cierzo blowing from the north and the humid breeze Garbí blowing from the southeast. For Cava, the sparkling process takes place in the bottle according to the Metodo Classico, with aging on the lees in the bottle ranging from 18 to 48 months.
