Château Belair-Monange

Château Bélair-Monange is a beautiful estate in Saint-Émilion, located near the ancient village, overlooking the Dordogne valley. It is a historic property of the area, whose origins date back to the 12th century. As far back as 1691, it was famous for the quality of its wines, which were already being exported abroad. Managed for over two centuries by the Canolle de Lescours family, it embarked on a path of true enhancement in the 18th century, thanks to the initiative of François Joseph Canolle and then his son François Antoine Joseph, who continued the activity in the name of excellence. Before the French Revolution, the value of the wines from the Château was equal to two or three times that of others in the area.  As a true pioneer, Château Bélair-Monange began bottling its wines starting in 1802.

The quality of production is confirmed towards the end of the 19th century. In 1850, the first edition of the local wine guide Cocks & Féret considers the Château as the best of the Premier Cru of Saint-Émilion.  In 1916, Château Bélair was purchased by M. and Mme Dubois-Challon and in 2008 it was sold to Christian and Edouard Moueix, who gave it the current name of Château Bélair-Monange. The new ownership proceeded with a complete restoration of the Château and in 2012 the estate was expanded with the acquisition of the vineyards of the nearby Château Magdelaine, Premier Grand Cru Classé. The arrangement of the vineyard was preceded by an analysis of the genetic heritage of the old vines, followed by a renewal of the plantings, after resting the soils for 5 years, in order to promote the vitality and natural fertility of the soils.

The renewal activity also involved the structures of the Château, with the restoration of the old buildings and the construction of new cellars. Today the estate extends over 23.5 hectares, in a single plot, and includes some of the most vocated areas of Saint-Émilion. The vines are located on the famous limestone plateau covered by a thin layer of clay, which gives fresh, mineral, and elegant wines; on the terraces of blue clays, on a limestone subsoil, which thanks to the south-facing exposure, produce intense and deep wines and on the clayey hills, which produce rich, generous, and harmonious wines. From these extraordinary terroirs come two great wines: Château Bélair-Monange Premier Grand Cru Classé de Saint-Émilion and Annonce de Bélair-Monange
