Clos Lentiscus
The family estate Clos Lenticus has been active for over 500 years in the Spanish territory of Catalonia. From Barcelona heading south along the coast, you encounter the municipality of Sant Pere de Ribes, home to the winery, which falls within the Penedès denomination, famous for its Cava, among the most renowned classic method sparkling wines in Spain.
At the helm of Clos Lenticus are the Aviño brothers, who have restored the ancient family farmhouse and have been marketing their wines since 2001. They have rediscovered some forgotten varieties such as Malvasia de Sitges and Sumoll, which have been added to the possible blends that can be used to produce a Cava sparkling wine. Since the farmhouse was modernized, the brothers have decided to pursue an ambitious project, based on ancient cultural systems and minimally invasive treatments, to best preserve the territorial expression. The modus operandi also includes biodynamic viticulture, where lunar phases are a fundamental element in choosing when to harvest the grapes. Also in the must is not treated, nor clarified, nor filtered, and finally bottled without the addition of sulfur.
The winery is located within the Garraf Natural Park, one of the most noted reserves in the region, home to a considerable variety of flora and fauna. It lies in front of the Mediterranean Sea, which in that small slice of land mixes with the Balearic Sea and thus influences the wines, giving them delicate and pleasant marine notes. The soil is primarily composed of limestone and is rich in organic matter and marine fossils, allowing the plant to absorb microelements and thus create wines with a mineral character and great aging potential. Therefore, with a multitude of natural elements and such a genuine approach, the wines of the Clos Lentiscus winery are unique in their kind!
