Cloudy Bay
Cloudy Bay is one of the most famous wineries in New Zealand, a true landmark of wine in the Marlborough region. It was founded in 1985 by David Hohnen, a pioneer of modern quality winemaking in New Zealand, and named Cloudy Bay in honor of the British explorer James Cook who, landing on the shores of present-day Marlborough in 1770 during a flood and adverse weather events, referred to the area as “cloudy bay”.
Today Cloudy Bay manages a vineyard estate of 310 hectares divided into large plots in sunny valleys not far from the sea. The vineyards are mostly located in Marlborough, the most important wine region in New Zealand where Sauvignon Blanc plays the role of undisputed protagonist. The Pinot Noir vineyards are instead found in the southern region known as Central Otago, also referred to as the El Dorado of Pinot Noir. This is the southernmost wine region in the world.
The wines of Cloudy Bay, known worldwide, have strongly contributed to making New Zealand one of the most important wine regions of the New World. These are wines that reflect the extraordinary terroir of origin and in which one can recognize: the varietal richness of the grape varieties, the fullness of the fruit due to the abundant presence of the sun, and the minerality of the sea breezes. The expressions of Cloudy Bay are always elegant, modern, and rich in emotions: wines that encapsulate the landscapes and essence of New Zealand.
