Constantina Sotelo
Constantina Sotelo is a winemaker who produces artisanal wines in the Rias Baixas region. The estate is located in Castrelo, in the Salnés Valley, in the historic area of cultivation of the native white grape variety Albariño. The project came to life in 1999 and was born from the desire to create unique wines capable of authentically interpreting the traditions of the territory. The estate is inspired by the ancient customs of the farming world and the experience of previous generations, who left behind not only the vineyards but also a deep love for the land and a respect for nature and the environment, minimizing human intervention so that the vine can express itself by releasing all its energies.
The estate consists of small plots with different exposures, characterized by soils made up of the disintegration of granite rocks or alluvial deposits. Some vineyards were planted by the ancestors of Constantina Sotelo and within the property there are also Albariño vines of particular value, which represent the historical memory of the estate and a precious treasure of biodiversity, with a variety of ancient biotypes that is absolutely unique.of particular value, which represent the historical memory of the estate and a precious treasure of biodiversity, with a variety of ancient biotypes that is absolutely unique. The old vines are trained only with the ancient parral system, a sort of canopy with vines that rise a couple of meters above the ground, creating a dense network of shoots supported by wires stretched between the stakes. The clusters are away from the ground, sheltered from humidity and the danger of being attacked by molds. The breezes coming from the Atlantic Ocean help to keep the vines well-ventilated and the grapes perfectly healthy.
The vineyards are managed with minimal intervention, in maximum respect for the ecosystem, which can count on a rich biodiversity. The training system requires exclusively manual work and harvesting, with selection in the vineyard of the best clusters. The grapes are quickly transported to the winery in small boxes and within an hour they are already sent for vinification, in order to maintain the integrity of the grapes and the fragrance of the aromas. The philosophy of the company is oriented towards the direct enhancement of the raw material to exalt the characteristics of the grapes, the terroir, and each individual vintage. The small winery has been created in an old stone building from the 1700s. The vinifications take place in a very simple way, using steel tanks, chestnut barrels, oak barrels, clay containers, porcelain stoneware, cement, terracotta, and glass.
