Costers del Priorat
Costers del Priorat is a young Spanish winery founded in 2000 by a group of wine enthusiasts. Enric Solé, Pau Urgell, Josep Massana, Marc Massana, and Josep Ramon Sedó decided to combine their strengths, knowledge, and professional experiences to create a new entrepreneurial project. In 2008, the winemaker Josep Mas also joined the company, bringing his extensive international experience to the business. The Priorat area is located southwest of Catalonia, in the first inland area of the Mediterranean coast and represents a territory of absolute excellence in the Spanish wine scene. The area is characterized by particularly favorable conditions for high-quality viticulture, based on low natural yields.
The Mediterranean climate is refreshed by cold air currents descending from the north, and the heat is always tempered by the influence of sea breezes. The territory consists of high, rather steep and rugged hills, offering splendid exposures, very bright. But the true peculiarity of the place is the presence of very poor, stony, and well-drained soils. The soils are composed of flakes of gravel generated by the disintegration of ancient blue and reddish slate rocks, very rich in mineral substances. The stones heat up during the day and return warmth to the vine during the cold nights, allowing a gradual ripening of the grapes, which arrive at harvest rich in fragrances and aromas.
The Costers del Priorat winery takes its name from the steep, often terraced slopes of a landscape with a harsh and rugged profile, with high altitudes and challenging viticulture that requires manual work typical of mountain areas. The territory has been shaped by the course of rivers, which have carved deep and sinuous valleys. The estate owns vineyards in three different areas of the region: Sant Martí, Mas Alsera, and Les Solanes, often cultivated with old bush vines planted in the 1930s and 1940s, capable of producing few clusters of exceptional quality and aromatic concentration. The winery is located in Les Solanes in a place where an ancient 15th-century Carthusian monastery building and some old mines once stood, which have been integrated into the wine aging area, creating an underground environment with natural temperature and humidity.
